Nonlocal momentum transfer in welcher Weg measurements

چکیده
A ‘‘which-path’’ ~welcher Weg! measurement necessarily destroys the fringes in a double-slit interference experiment. We show that in all instances one may attribute this destruction to a disturbance of the particle’s momentum by an amount equal to at least p\/2d , where d is the slit separation, in accordance with the uncertainty principle. However, this momentum transfer need not be local; that is, it need not act at either of the slits through which the particle passes. For well-known welcher Weg measurements such as Einstein’s recoiling slit and Feynman’s light microscope, the disturbance can be understood in terms of random classical momentum kicks that act locally. In some recent proposals, including that by Scully, Englert, and Walther @Nature ~London! 351, 111 ~1991!#, the momentum transfer is of a peculiarly quantum, nonlocal nature. In this paper we introduce a formalism based on the Wigner function, as this describes both the local and nonlocal momentum transfer caused by any welcher Weg measurement. We show that for some examples, such as that of Scully, Englert, and Walther, there is no momentum disturbance at the slits even though the nonlocal momentum disturbance is sufficient to destroy the interference pattern. Finally, we discuss the experimental signatures of nonlocal versus local momentum transfer and demonstrate a strong similarity to the nonlocality of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. @S1050-2947~97!04006-7#

Randomization of quantum relative phase in welcher Weg measurements
Welcher Weg (which-path) detectors where complementarity is enforced without altering the interfering beams are analysed in terms of the quantum relative phase. In such a case, the measurement disturbs the interference via random classical phase shifts. This applies when the interfering particles are atoms or photons. In the case of photons, the quantum relative phase coincides with the field p...
متن کاملWelcher Weg Experiments from the Bohm Perspective
We re-examine the claim made by Englert, Scully, Süssman and Walther that in certain ‘Welcher Weg’ (Which Way) interference experiments, the Bohm trajectories behave in such a bizarre and unacceptable way that they must be considered as unreliable and even ‘surreal’. We show that this claim cannot be correct and is based on an incorrect use of the Bohm approach.
متن کاملResonance Energy–Exchange–Free Detection and ‘Welcher Weg’ Experiment
It is shown that a monolithic total–internal–reflection resonator can be used for energy–exchange–free detections of objects without recoils. Related energy–exchange–free detection of ‘welcher Weg’ is discussed and an experiment with an atom interferometer is proposed. The obtained results are in agreement with quantum theory. متن کاملDeformation Quantization: Quantum Mechanics Lives and Works in Phase-space
Wigner’s quasi-probability distribution function in phase-space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence (eg, quantum computing); quantum chaos; “Welcher Weg” discussions; semiclassical limits. It is also of importance in signal processing. Nevertheless, a remarkable aspect of its...
متن کاملAsking photons where they have been.
We present surprising experimental evidence regarding the past of photons passing through an interferometer. The information about the positions through which the photons pass in the interferometer is retrieved from modulations of the detected signal at the vibration frequencies of mirrors the photons bounce off. From the analysis we conclude that the past of the photons is not represented by c...
